John Lenehan is an internationally acclaimed pianist, composer and arranger with a passion for silent movies. In January, he performed the world première of “The Roaring Twenties” to a rapturous reception at Champs Hill. This evening’s performance is one you will be sure to enjoy both visually and acoustically.
During the programme, film clips and a few still photographs from the 1920s will be shown and John will briefly introduce each section. While you are watching them, and reading the subtitles, John will play appropriate music on the piano, including a wonderful rendition of “Rhapsody in Blue”.
Before 1927, when “The Jazz Singer” was released, all movies were silent but accompanied by an organ or a few musicians, who enhanced the total effect by their choice of music. John has managed to recreate this effect by arranging the perfect backing, which he will play brilliantly.
