SUMMARY:Event M09: Debussy\, Chopin\, Shostakovitch. Sonatas for cello and piano
DESCRIPTION:Pavlos Carvalho (cello) and Andrew Quartermain (piano) explore ground-breaking masterpieces all now admired for the elegance and romanticism of their lyrical melodies. However\, when first performed\, each was misunderstood\, often being dismissed as the writings of composers not sound of mind or body. \nPavlos Carvalho has been a prizewinner in International competitions in Britain\, Italy\, Russia and Germany as well as working with orchestras including the London Philharmonic and Northern Sinfonia. He has been invited to play for Prince Charles at Kensington Palace and for the 70th birthday celebrations of Rostropovitch. He has performed as soloist with the Royal Philharmonic\, Covent garden Chamber Orchestra and Southern Pro Musica among others. He is also one of the founding members of chamber music group\, Ensemble Reza. \nHe has regularly performed in a variety of venues from smaller\, intimate venues such as the Green Note and Vortex  to  venues such as the Purcell room\, Kings Place\, Royal Albert Hall\, Cadogan Hall\, Royal Festival Hall\, Barbican\, Teatro dal Verme\, and recorded for the BBC. \nA big part of Pavlos’ musical life also involves outreach and education work. He has worked for groups such as Live Music Now\, Pied Piper\, In Harmony\, Music for Life and the Trinity’s Laban’s Animate Orchestra. He gives masterclasses and workshops for the London cello society and has also been director for the National Chamber music cello courses of Pro Corda. \nPavlos has been performing regularly at the Chichester festival for the last 13 years. \nAndrew Quartermain is a British concert pianist and music educator. For 17 years he was CEO and Artistic Director of Pro Corda\, the National Chamber Music School. There he oversaw a huge expansion of participation\, including national schools delivery and the only UK music festival dedicated to chamber music in schools. It was also where he founded the national Create Together programme for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. This series went on to serve SEND schools throughout the country. The educational possibilities for music and autism has been a particular focus of Andrews’ career. \nAndrew also focuses on adult education and runs regular Piano Retreat Weekends for adult learners. He also founded the Piano Sanctuary company and brand. \nHe performs widely with instrumentalists from across Europe\, and has a long standing association with Ensemble Reza.

SUMMARY:Event M16: Classical Threads\, Persian Colours
DESCRIPTION:The concert bridges two worlds: the intricate elegance of Western classical music meets the unique textures of contemporary Iranian compositions. Iranian musicians will present an evocative programme that highlights the dialogue between tradition and innovation\, East and West\, in a captivating concert experience. \nClassical Threads\, Persian Colours brings together two rich musical traditions in a programme that explores dialogue\, contrast\, and connection. Pianist Mahya Mahroomi is joined by Laleh Abbasi\, the Ney (Persian Flute) player\, a traditional wooden wind instrument with a deeply expressive and almost vocal quality\, to create a sound world where Western classical forms meet the colours and sounds of Iranian music. \nFollowing the success of last year’s East in the West; From Classical Roots to Persian Resonance\, which showcased contemporary Iranian composers to a delighted audience\, this concert continues the journey of bringing Persian music into dialogue with Western classical traditions. The programme highlights both solo and collaborative performances\, blending Mahroomi’s piano interpretations of Iranian compositions with the evocative melodies of the Ney. \nThe works by contemporary Iranian composers are rooted in classical structures yet enriched with Persian modes\, rhythms\, and poetic sensibilities. Together with Western classical pieces\, they reveal surprising resonances\, emotional depth\, and a vibrant conversation between two musical worlds. \nRather than fusing East and West into a single style\, the concert celebrates their dialogue\, a meeting of lyricism\, storytelling\, and expressive nuance. From intimate\, reflective passages to virtuosic displays\, the performance offers a journey through tradition\, innovation\, and the shared language of music. \nClassical Threads\, Persian Colours is a celebration of cultural exchange and artistic connection. It invites audiences to experience the richness of contemporary Iranian music alongside Western classics\, continuing a mission to highlight the voices of Iranian composers on the international stage.

SUMMARY:Event M20: A European Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:Hampshire Recorder Sinfonia’s stunning musical performances under the direction of Helen Hooker have undoubtedly reversed the public’s perception of the recorder’s extraordinary sound and capability. All seven sizes of instrument from the tiny sopranino to the growling subcontrabass will feature in this evening’s characterful musical journey across Europe. \nThe recorder is one of the most quietly beautiful and remarkably adaptable instruments in the world. It’s probably the most underestimated! Ultimately\, whatever its size\, the mystique of the instrument lies in its paradox: it is simple yet profound\, ancient and yet current\, delicate yet powerful. In skilled hands it becomes astonishingly expressive and can portray sorrow\, joy\, mischief and serenity.

SUMMARY:Event M23: Strings of Light (Secrets of the Harp Guitar)
DESCRIPTION:International award-winning guitarist and composer Jon Pickard presents a rare solo performance on the extraordinary 23-string harp-guitar. Blending classical\, folk and original music\, shimmering textures and lyrical storytelling create an immersive\, transporting experience. “Weaves a flying carpet on the strings… almost unbelievable\, technically and stylistically.” — Akustik Gitarre Magazine. \nInternational award-winning guitarist and composer Jon Pickard presents a rare solo performance on the extraordinary 23-string harp-guitar\, an instrument whose extended range and resonance create a soundworld unlike anything else in contemporary guitar music. Melody\, harmony\, and deep sympathetic bass lines unfold together\, surrounding the listener in layers of sound that feel both ancient and alive. The programme moves between classical\, folk\, and original compositions\, shaped into music that feels less like a conventional concert and more like a shared experience. There is an echo of older traditions here — when musicians were storytellers\, and music carried memory\, place\, and meaning. The performance invites stillness and attention\, drawing audiences out of everyday time and into something slower and more elemental. \nRooted in an instrument with over 300 years of history\, the harp-guitar carries traces of early European music while opening up textures that feel strikingly modern. Pickard’s approach is immersive and cinematic\, allowing resonance and silence to work together. Audiences frequently describe a powerful sense of journey and transformation\, with BritishTheatre.com observing\, “In Pickard’s hands the ability of the instrument to teleport the listener is breath-taking.”\nEmotion lies at the centre of the music. The performances are quietly intense\, offering moments of reflection\, wonder\, and emotional depth. As The Fine Times Recorder writes\, “Beautiful\, atmospheric….profoundly emotional and spiritual…You want to close your eyes and let the pictures created by the musician take you.” \nWidely respected on both sides of the Atlantic\, Pickard is recognised as one of the foremost harp-guitarists of his generation. In 2025\, he won Best Guitar Composition at the Široki Brijeg Guitarist Festival\, affirming his voice as both composer and performer. Critics consistently highlight the rarity of the experience\, with Akustik Gitarre Magazine praising his playing as “almost unbelievable\, technically and stylistically.”
