SUMMARY:Event M35: American Choral Music on the 250th Anniversary of American Independence
DESCRIPTION:On the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence\, Portsmouth Baroque Choir present a programme of American Choral Music\, from William Billings to Eric Whitacre. \nIn between there is music from Aaron Copland\, Charles Ives\, Randall Thompson and Samuel Barber. The main work is Morton Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna. \n“Our day of dependence\, our long apprenticeship to the learning of other lands\, draws to a close. The millions that around us are rushing into life cannot always be fed on the sere remains of foreign harvests. Events\, actions arise\, that must be sung\, that will sing themselves.” \nThe American states’ declaration of independence in 1786 marked a political breaking point but their cultural revolution had already begun well before Emerson’s famous American Scholar lecture articulated that resonant challenge some fifty years later. \nAmerican composers cannot ignore the vastness of the landscape and the excitement of their people’s talent for invention and enterprise: they inspire awesome textures\, sounds of ineffable beauty\, looking to a Pacific as well as to an Atlantic horizon. Neither can they entirely shake off the ancestral roots: old world structures and new world spirit intertwine. \nPortsmouth Baroque Choir under the direction of Malcolm Keeler will take you across the American continent\, a Route 66 calling at all decades and a range of vocal styles from the rule-busting\, patriotic hymnody of William Billings (1770s) to the haunting lushness of Eric Whitacre (2000s) via Amy Beach\, gentle bitonality from “Yankee Maverick” Charles Ives\, Samuel Barber\, George Gershwin\, Aaron Copland\, Randall Thompson and Morten Lauridsen whose Lux Aeterna illuminates most of the second half of this celebration of a musical culture that in a relatively short space of time has reached extraordinary heights.

SUMMARY:Event M45: Chichester Symphony Orchestra Summer Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a musical journey from the very tip of South America to Leipzig in Germany where Schumann’s Symphony No 1 was first performed in March 1841. We break our journey in London where Elgar’s Cello Concerto was premiered in 1919. Our soloist will be the acclaimed Aglaia Carvalho-Dubost. \nSimon Wilkins has conducted Chichester Symphony Orchestra since 2018. He is also an accomplished cellist\, music teacher and composer. He invites us to join with him on a musical journey to the very tip of South America\, and the landscapes of the Tierra del Fuego – literally\, the land of fire. For this composition\, Simon took Latin rhythms and film music as his inspiration. Originally composed some years ago\, it has now been revised and updated for 2026. \nFrom there we head to Leipzig in Germany where Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 was first performed in March 1841\, some six months after Schumann had finally managed to marry his childhood sweetheart\, Clara Wieck. It was to be a fruitful partnership\, even though Clara’s father was bitterly opposed to the marriage. This symphony by Schumann will be the major work in the second half of our concert. \nThe middle work in our concert will be a performance of the Cello Concerto by Edward Elgar. The concerto was composed in the aftermath of World War I while Elgar and his wife were staying at Brinkwells\, their country cottage in Fittleworth\, West Sussex. It is quite different in style from the earlier Violin Concerto and is much more contemplative and elegiac. The concerto was dedicated to Sir Sidney Colvin and his wife – friends of the Elgar’s (Sir Sidney was a curator at the British Museum). \nThe Cello Concerto is one of the most popular today in the international repertoire partly as a result of performances and/or recordings by Jacqueline du Pre\, Mstislav Rostropovich\, Paul Tortelier\, Julian Lloyd-Webber and Sheku Kanneh-Mason. Our own soloist is the already acclaimed Aglaia Carvalho-Dubost who is at the start of her professional career and has already performed at London’s Barbican\, the Royal Albert Hall and Wigmore Hall.

SUMMARY:Event M52: Echoes and Dreams: An Evening of Nostalgic Greek music
DESCRIPTION:Pavlos Carvalho (bouzouki)\, Sarah Carvalho-Dubost (cello) and George Tsolakis (vocals/guitar) take you on a journey through all of Greece with classic songs by Loizos\, Theodorakis\, Zabetas\, Xarhakos\, Hadjidakis and more. \nAn evening of beautiful Greek music that offers a bridge to the past\, across the seas\, and a glimpse into the future. Music from different eras of great Greek composers including Tsitsanis\, Zabetas\, Theodorakis\, Xarhakos\, Hadjidakis\, Loizos\, Kazandizis\, Andriopoulos\, as well as original compositions from members of the group. Arrangements for voice\, guitar\, cello\, bouzouki\, baglama and harmonica. Songs such as Eho ena Kafene\, Tzamaikia\, Min klais\, Paei\, paei\, Siko horepse koukli mou and many more that have resonated throughout Greek households for so many decades. \nMusicians\nGeorge Tsolakis (voice\, guitar\, baglama)\,\nSarah Carvalho-Dubost (voice\, cello\, guitar)\,\nPavlos Carvalho (voice\, bouzouki\, harmonica) \nGeorge\, Sarah and Pavlos are musicians who have been on the Greek music scene for many years. Between them they perform with different groups\, including Amalgama\, Plastikes Karekles and The Icons of Greek Music Project\, to name but a few. They have performed at venues including the Green Note\, Vortex\, Jamboree\, Royal Festival Hall\, King’s Place and Royal Albert Hall. However\, their passion is playing in the smaller\, more intimate venues where they present these songs\, closer to the audience\, in an ambience of sharing and intimate storytelling. \nEven though the classical cello is not an instrument traditionally associated with Greek music\, when its rich\, human\, sustained sound combines with the sparkle of the bouzouki and the exoticness of Greek microtonal voice\, something magical happens. Two worlds become one and a new common language emerges. After trying it once\, the results were such a beautiful revelation that continuing to explore this minimal combination of instruments with voice was too irresistible to not go further. So here we are\, with a very personal project that includes our arrangements of traditional Greek songs we love and some new compositions of ours\, inspired by the music of the past.
