SUMMARY:Event M23: Strings of Light (Secrets of the Harp Guitar)
DESCRIPTION:International award-winning guitarist and composer Jon Pickard presents a rare solo performance on the extraordinary 23-string harp-guitar. Blending classical\, folk and original music\, shimmering textures and lyrical storytelling create an immersive\, transporting experience. “Weaves a flying carpet on the strings… almost unbelievable\, technically and stylistically.” — Akustik Gitarre Magazine. \nInternational award-winning guitarist and composer Jon Pickard presents a rare solo performance on the extraordinary 23-string harp-guitar\, an instrument whose extended range and resonance create a soundworld unlike anything else in contemporary guitar music. Melody\, harmony\, and deep sympathetic bass lines unfold together\, surrounding the listener in layers of sound that feel both ancient and alive. The programme moves between classical\, folk\, and original compositions\, shaped into music that feels less like a conventional concert and more like a shared experience. There is an echo of older traditions here — when musicians were storytellers\, and music carried memory\, place\, and meaning. The performance invites stillness and attention\, drawing audiences out of everyday time and into something slower and more elemental. \nRooted in an instrument with over 300 years of history\, the harp-guitar carries traces of early European music while opening up textures that feel strikingly modern. Pickard’s approach is immersive and cinematic\, allowing resonance and silence to work together. Audiences frequently describe a powerful sense of journey and transformation\, with BritishTheatre.com observing\, “In Pickard’s hands the ability of the instrument to teleport the listener is breath-taking.”\nEmotion lies at the centre of the music. The performances are quietly intense\, offering moments of reflection\, wonder\, and emotional depth. As The Fine Times Recorder writes\, “Beautiful\, atmospheric….profoundly emotional and spiritual…You want to close your eyes and let the pictures created by the musician take you.” \nWidely respected on both sides of the Atlantic\, Pickard is recognised as one of the foremost harp-guitarists of his generation. In 2025\, he won Best Guitar Composition at the Široki Brijeg Guitarist Festival\, affirming his voice as both composer and performer. Critics consistently highlight the rarity of the experience\, with Akustik Gitarre Magazine praising his playing as “almost unbelievable\, technically and stylistically.”

SUMMARY:Event M25: Nashville Nights
DESCRIPTION:Y’all ready for a night of boots\, hats\, and big country fun? Nashville Nights is comin’ to The Boxgrove\, and it’s gonna be a rip-roarin’\, toe-tappin’ evening you won’t forget! \nWe’ve got live music all the way\, from classic country hits by legends like Shania Twain\, Dolly Parton\, and Lee Ann Womack\, to a little Elvis magic thrown in just for fun. And don’t worry — the band’s also serving up a few original country songs\, bringing fresh tunes to a night already bursting with energy. \nSharing the stage are award-winning performers John Gleadall\, DiElle\, and Chris Wood\, whose signature harmonies and playful performances will have you smiling\, clapping\, and maybe even boot-scootin’ along. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or a first-timer\, you’re covered — we’ll teach beginner-friendly line dances during selected songs\, plus seated and hand-jive versions so everyone can join in. Only about three dances on the night\, so you can try ’em out — or just sit back\, sip your drink and soak up the music. \nWe’ll kick off 7:30–8pm with a quick run-through of the dances\, then let the music roll at 8pm. Don’t fret — the band will recap the moves as each number comes up\, so you’re never lost. Cowboy boots and hats are welcome\, but not required — what matters most is having fun\, laughing\, and enjoying great country tunes with friends. \nSo grab a buddy\, put on your boots (or just your listening ears)\, and join us for a night of Nashville magic\, live music\, and plenty of yee-haws!

SUMMARY:Event M24: Strings Of Light (Secrets of the Harp-Guitar)
DESCRIPTION:International award-winning guitarist and composer Jon Pickard presents a rare and spellbinding performance on 23-string Harp-Guitars. Classical\, folk and original compositions. Shimmering textures\, lyrical storytelling. A truly immersive musical journey. “Weaves a flying carpet on the strings… almost unbelievable\, technically and stylistically.” — Akustik Gitarre Magazine.\nBar refreshments available. \nStrings Of Light will transport audiences back to a time when bards would play music and tell stories around a fire. The music creates atmosphere as much as it creates form\, surrounding the listener and encouraging imagination to take over. \nRooted in an instrument with over 300 years of history\, the harp-guitar carries echoes of early European traditions while revealing possibilities that still feel startlingly new. Many audience members describe a vivid sense of journey and transformation\, as quoted by BritishTheatre.com: “In Pickard’s hands the ability of the instrument to teleport the listener is breath-taking.” \nMusical storytelling lies at the centre of the programme. The music speaks directly\, offering moments of reflection\, wonder\, and stillness. The Fine Times Recorder describes it as “Beautiful\, atmospheric… profoundly emotional and spiritual… You want to close your eyes and let the pictures created by the musician take you.” Each piece becomes a space for personal interpretation\, where images and stories arise naturally in the mind. \nJon is respected on both sides of the Atlantic as one of the foremost harp guitarists of his generation\, both for his playing and his beautiful compositions. He designed both of his instruments himself (inspired by others)\, and still continues to work on new variants. \nCritics and venues consistently highlight the rarity of the experience itself:\n“A rare musical treat… a consummate musician… a sensitive and versatile player.” — Buxton Fringe \n“I have been involved with music all of my life and have never seen nor heard anything to match this. The harp guitar is really quite amazing and your mastery of it is simply staggering.” — The Old Theatre Royal\, Bath \nFor audiences seeking something authentic\, immersive\, and quietly powerful\, this performance offers a chance to reconnect with music as storytelling — intimate\, evocative and unforgettable.

SUMMARY:Event C08: Goodwood Art Foundation and Sage House Lunch
DESCRIPTION:The stunning Goodwood Art Foundation is hosting a unique lunch to celebrate the arts in Chichester and to raise money for the pioneering dementia support work of Sage House at Tangmere. \nThanks to the globally renowned Chichester Festival Theatre\, our city has attracted some of the biggest celebrities. But what were they really like? No one knows better than the Chichester Observer’s acclaimed arts editor Phil Hewitt\, who is also the founding chairman of the Festival of Chichester. \nPhil will be revealing ‘Secrets of the Stars’  at the Foundation’s unique dining experience on Wednesday\, July 1 – and you won’t want to miss it. Stories about Dame Patricia Routledge\, his attempts to pursue the entire I\, Claudius cast\, talking to greats including Leo McKern\, Leslie Phillips\, and Joss Ackland – and why he has never felt more nervous than interviewing a Rolling Stone. \nPhil said: “There will also be tales of an encounter with the grumpiest ever rock star\, my delightful chat with a real-life Python – of the Monty kind – and the incredible thrill of watching Hercule Poirot appear before my very eyes.” \nThe lunch will be hosted by the incoming High Sheriff of West Sussex Gary Shipton – who has himself been associated with the Observer for nearly half a century – with all profits in aid of Sage House. Phil will take the opportunity to quiz Gary on his new role too. \nThere are only 70 places at the lunch and tickets priced £60 (which include a glass of fizz) are expected to sell out quickly. So secure yours today at www.dementiasupport/event-details-registration/goodwood-art-foundation-lunch. We look forward to seeing you there. \nThe dining event offers a small plates menu inspired by the surrounding landscape. The menu will showcase seasonal and foraged ingredients alongside organic produce from Goodwood’s Home Farm.

SUMMARY:Event M28: By The Sleepy Lagoon - Selsey Gramophone Society
DESCRIPTION:Embark on a metaphorical musical meander to the shores of the Sleepy Lagoon. Inspired by the natural beauty that moved composer Eric Coates\, presenter Martin Elliott weaves together a rich tapestry of audio recordings relating to the history\, sociology\, and hidden landmarks of the Manhood area\, while on the way. \nThe Selsey Gramophone Society\, now entering its fifth year\, runs a meeting once a month under the auspices of Arts Dream Selsey to play audio recordings of a wide range of genres and in a variety of formats. This coming July 1 meeting is extra special in highlighting well-known features of the Manhood Peninsula through recordings and readings related to the local landscape and its natural environment. Presenter and co-leader of the Society\, Martin Elliott\, will take you on a metaphorical trip from Chichester\, around the Pagham Harbour Reserve and on via the Sleepy Lagoon to that lovely stretch of English coast\, Selsey’s East Beach. The overall theme title to this unique meeting is A Musical Meander to the Sleepy Lagoon. \nOur listeners love the idea of a monthly theme given by a different presenter and the Society always allows time for them to bring their own selections to be shared. They particularly like to bring choices relating to the month’s theme\, setting themselves a challenge to find related recordings. The July meeting will be no exception\, so feel free to think outside the box and not be too literal if you feel you wish to take this challenge on. \nThe Society’s meetings are usually held in the Selsey Club\, Coxes Road\, (club membership is not required)\, on the first Wednesday of the month at 2.30pm where refreshments are easily available. Arts Dream Selsey will provide a variety of refreshments at the July meeting in Selsey’s Town Hall in exchange for a donation to the charity’s funds\, while entrance to the event is free. \nFurther information at www.artsdreamselsey.co.uk and on TicketSource. Free admission. Refreshments by donations.

SUMMARY:Event SW15: Jenny Andersson – Centres For Life
DESCRIPTION:Jenny Andersson returns to talk about her study for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation\, how Centres For Life can help revitalise and regenerate places\, followed by a collective exploration of the regenerative horizon for Chichester. Questions like what are Centres For Life and why are they important will be explored. \nJenny Andersson\, of Really Regenerative CIC\, returns to help us explore how Centres For Life can help revitalise\, regenerate and renew vibrancy in urban and rural places. What are Centres For Life? Why are they important? What’s their role in shaping the future? How do they form? What do they look like? Do we have any in Chichester that can energise our culture\, economy and ecology? All these questions and more will be explored. \nReally Regenerative’s founder Jenny Andersson will give a short talk on Centres For Life from her published study for Joseph Rowntree Foundation – Enabling Conditions for Place-Based Community-Led Regeneration\, followed by a collective exploration with attendees of what’s on the future regenerative horizon for Chichester. We’ll work in groups to explore key questions about the future. What Centres do we need\, do we want and how can we bring them to life? What do we already have that we could build on? How ready are we in Chichester to bring these Centres to life; what strengths do we have\, what’s missing from our capabilities\, what are our best opportunities and what other projects could inspire us? How could such Centres be funded\, financed and supported? \nJoin us for a vitalising exploration of how Centres For Life underpin the potential for regenerative futures in Chichester.
