DESCRIPTION:At the forefront of UK’s world music scene\, Olayá is a female-led flute & percussion band inspired by Northeastern Brazilian bandas de pifanos (bamboo flutes)\, forró tunes and vocal harmonies blending jazz\, soul\, rock\, and diverse Brazilian genres for a quirky take on a traditional sound. \nLIVE MUSIC: 3 pm – 5 pm with interval (garden opens at 1.30 pm)\nLight Interval refreshments on the house.\nDress to enjoy Brazilian dancing in the beautiful garden at Lordington House.\nBring your own low chairs\, rugs\, cushions\, picnics\, sunhats\, sunglasses\, raincoats and umbrellas… and your own booze!\nThis event is for all ages. A Jazz Hall of Fame inductee\, Abate delivers world-class virtuosity and high-octane swing. Don’t miss this exhilarating collaboration of international talent for an unforgettable night in the quintessential atmosphere of The Havana Club.. \nA relentless jazz road warrior\, US saxophonist Greg Abate has spent over five decades cementing his status as one of the most exciting post-hard bop soloists in the world. A graduate of the Berklee College of Music\, Abate first rose to international prominence in the mid-1970s playing lead alto saxophone for the legendary Ray Charles Orchestra. He later contributed his virtuosity to the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra under Dick Johnson in the mid-1980s. \nAbate’s career is defined by high-profile collaborations with some of the greatest names in jazz history. He famously recorded and performed with his mentor\, the late alto master Phil Woods\, most notably on the 2016 album Kindred Spirits: Live at Chan’s. His 2021 release\, Magic Dance\, featured NEA Jazz Master pianist Kenny Barron and was hailed as one of the year’s best albums. Other distinguished collaborators include Red Rodney\, Billy Hart\, Rufus Reid\, Claudio Roditi\, and James Williams. \nRecognised for his muscular and inventive playing style\, Abate is frequently compared to bebop titans like Charlie Parker and Sonny Stitt. His extensive discography spans over 20 albums as a leader\, including the Grammy-nominated Evolution (2002) and his 2024 quartet release\, Positive Energy. \nHis contributions to the genre have earned him numerous accolades\, including a 2016 induction into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame and consistent rankings in the Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls for alto sax. Beyond the stage\, Abate serves as an educator and adjunct professor of jazz studies at Rhode Island College\, sharing his lifetime of expertise with the next generation of musicians.

DESCRIPTION:Jon Stokes set out to describe and celebrate all of Britain and Ireland’s native trees and shrubs\, but first he had to find them! The Tree Council’s Director of Trees\, Science and Research takes us on his journey with this illustrated talk. Hosted by Chichester Tree Wardens. \nJon is one of Britain’s leading tree conservationists and has been studying the world of trees for over thirty years. He’s also an entertaining speaker with a photographer’s eye\, able to bring to life his constant curiosity and love for trees. \nChichester Tree Wardens volunteer as part of the national Tree Warden scheme\, founded in 1990 by The Tree Council. We aim to harness our own love for trees to inspire interest\, understanding\, and care for trees in our city and surrounds. \nWe hope you will join us for Jon’s talk (about an hour\, with questions and answers)\, refreshments\, conversation\, and\, conditions permitting\, the chance to get outdoors and look at nearby trees. \nRefreshments included.
