DESCRIPTION:Catherine Barnes offers an exhibition of 20 paintings in the porch\, plus 100 others in the store. Choose two from a catalogue in the car port. You sit; we bring; we hang; you look. A unique opportunity to spend time looking at your choice. Unlimited street parking at weekend. Families welcome. \nCatherine was a student at Folkestone School of Art and Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in the 1960s and subsequently at Goldsmiths’ College\, London. She has exhibited widely since the 1980s in England and Europe as well as locally. Catherine has also been a visiting lecturer at the University of Southampton and a visiting art historian and tutor at Southampton City Art Gallery. \n“It was during lockdown in 2021\, when nothing was open\, I found a way to hold a Covid safe exhibition in my porch where individuals could view about 20 paintings and another collection in the display rack. Instead of looking at images on tiny screens it was rewarding at that time to enable people to experience the real paintings – the building up of an oil painting or the texture of an etching. I found it unforgettable how\, after lockdown\, people reacted. \n“Visitors in 2026 can experience a selection of work in the porch\, then sit and choose a few of the 100 or more paintings\, prints or drawings (from photographs) and look at the real thing in the garden (in the Studio if wet). DESCRIPTION:Zoe Barnett\, rising star of the classical guitar\, presents a solo recital for a midsummer evening\, including works by English composers Dowland and Walton plus folk-inspired repertoire from around the world\, highlighting the expressive range of the guitar in the intimate setting of St John’s Chapel. \nZoe\, from Chichester\, is a graduate of the Royal College of Music and gave a very successful recital for the Festival of Chichester in 2024. Known for her captivating performances as a guitarist who plays standing up\, she has played at venues such as King’s Place and Wigmore Hall and has circumnavigated the world as a cruise ship performer. DESCRIPTION:An evening recital in the University Chapel\, with music by Shostakovich\, Debussy\, Brahms\, Jarman\, Schnittke\, and the UK premiere of Spiros Mazis’ Adagio. \nThis concert features cello & piano sonatas from the Romantic period. Alongside these Laura and Christine present three short\, deeply moving\, melodic contemporary works: Schnittke’s Musica Nostalgica\, composed in 1992; Dr Spiros Mazis’ Adagio\, composed in 2016; and Dr Jill Jarman’s Prelude\, composed in 2025. \nProfessor Laura Ritchie is Professor of Learning and Teaching at the University of Chichester Conservatoire and Dr Christine Tokatlian is Assistant Professor Music/Music Performance at the American College of Greece. \nParking Charges at The University of Chichester are:\n£2.10 an hour from 8am – 6pm.\n£1.50 from 6pm until 8am next morning.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a musical journey across North America\, blending classical masterpieces\, including Dvořák’s American Quartet\, with toe-tapping tunes of jazz\, blues\, country and bluegrass. \nWith arrangements for strings\, accordion\, banjo\, plus some unexpected surprises\, this promises to be an evening of sumptuous music that crosses borders\, bringing generations together. \nEstablished over a decade ago\, Ensemble Reza is a group of mostly Sussex-based professional musicians\, with the shared passion to create an exciting and inclusive musical community for audiences across Sussex and the South East. Widely celebrated for their accessible virtuoso performances\, they were thrilled to welcome Dame Judi Dench as Patron in their tenth anniversary year. “I’m a real fan of Ensemble Reza. The passion and virtuosity of the musicians is evident in every note they play”. \nThe core ensemble of seven string players regularly expands to include accordion\, bouzouki\, guitar\, double bass and piano. With talented composers and arrangers within the group\, Ensemble Reza offers unique cross-cultural experiences spanning classical\, folk\, jazz and world music. \nAlongside their work with Ensemble Reza\, members enjoy busy performing careers with leading ensembles\, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra\, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra\, London Symphony Orchestra and London Mozart Players\, as well as the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company. \nOver the past decade\, Ensemble Reza has developed a rich and varied programme of events including concerts\, free community performances\, a community orchestra for all ages/abilities and an extensive education programme. Neither can they entirely shake off the ancestral roots: old world structures and new world spirit intertwine. \nPortsmouth Baroque Choir under the direction of Malcolm Keeler will take you across the American continent\, a Route 66 calling at all decades and a range of vocal styles from the rule-busting\, patriotic hymnody of William Billings (1770s) to the haunting lushness of Eric Whitacre (2000s) via Amy Beach\, gentle bitonality from “Yankee Maverick” Charles Ives\, Samuel Barber\, George Gershwin\, Aaron Copland\, Randall Thompson and Morten Lauridsen whose Lux Aeterna illuminates most of the second half of this celebration of a musical culture that in a relatively short space of time has reached extraordinary heights.

Elizabeth Wells is preparing a concert to celebrate women’s suffrage and the end of the Great War. But she cannot celebrate the future without reconciling herself to her tragic past. \nElizabeth recounts her captivating story of one woman’s personal liberation set against the fight for suffrage and the death of the Victorian oyster industry. \nPoisoned Beds is a collaboration between Lucy Flannery and Greg Mosse\, two highly-regarded theatre writers\, and the play will delight audiences with its clever combination of comedy and pathos\, sharp dialogue\, unexpected plot twists and wonderfully witty lyrics. \nWest End actress Paula Tinker gives a virtuoso performance in this superb one-act script\, accompanied on stage by much-loved theatre composer John Gleadall. SUMMARY:Event M38: Piano Masterclass with Dr Christine Tokatlian
DESCRIPTION:Dr Christine Tokatlian comes to us from Athens\, Greece\, to present this masterclass featuring students and alumni from the University of Chichester Conservatoire. \nChristine Tokatlian is an Associate Professor at Deree – The American College of Greece. A concert pianist praised for her academic distinctions and passionate performance\, she has been awarded the honorary Eleni Myconiou prize for artistic excellence by the Athens Academy (2008). A graduate of RCM\, she has extensively performed in national and international venues and has collaborated with renowned ensembles and orchestras. Her repertoire includes works by classical\, romantic and contemporary composers\, as well as new and experimental music. \nResearch findings of her PhD thesis\, Redefining Armenian Musical Identity (Chichester\, 2023) have been extensively presented in conferences. Her recording Armenian Piano Images (2011) includes works of contemporary Armenian composers. Christine serves as a jury member in national competitions and gives piano masterclasses in Greece and abroad. Her students have been awarded several prizes and distinctions in international piano competitions. DESCRIPTION:Portsmouth Choral Union with The Consort of Twelve presents Handel’s Samson\, first performed in Covent Garden\, London in 1743. Renowned for its dramatic power\, magnificent choruses\, expressive solos and intricate orchestration. Come and enjoy this compelling oratorio. Conductor David Gostick. \nHandel composed Samson immediately after Messiah in 1741 but it was not performed until 1743 in London. It proved an instant success and has never fallen entirely out of favour since then. \nSamson is about the biblical judge Samson\, focusing on his betrayal by his Philistine lover Dalila\, who discovers his strength comes from his uncut hair and has it shorn\, leading to his capture\, blinding\, and enslavement by the Philistines.

Performed by the Full Circle Quartet with poet Mandy Pannett plus jazz/roots ensemble Poetry in Motion\, with brilliant saxophonists Josephine Davies and Charlotte Glasson and top-class jazz musicians. \nThe South Downs Poetry Festival is delighted to bring together two exciting music/poetry ensembles for a very special performance overlooking the Roman ruins in the Novium museum. The South Downs Suite intersperses Mandy Pannett’s evocative Downland poems with original jazz from the Full Circle Quartet\, comprising bandleader and bassist Terry Pack\, award-winning saxophonist Josephine Davies\, TV composer Joss Peach and drummer Angus Bishop. \nThe Poetry in Motion ensemble focuses on the visionary poems of William Blake\, who lived in Sussex and was tried in Chichester for sedition\, with the streetwise verse of the American Beats who were inspired by Blake. The ensemble comprises poet Barry Smith\, guitarist Chris Hardy and saxophonist Charlotte Glasson. Clear the decks for an evening of visionary experience.

SUMMARY:Event M42: Bach Solo Suites 1 and 5
DESCRIPTION:Pavlos Carvalho performs and shares thoughts on two of Bach’s remarkable\, experimental and adventurous suites for solo cello: the youthful purity of the 1st suite in G major Suite by Bach\, paired with his profound\, pensive and meditative 5th suite in C minor. \nPavlos Carvalho has been a prizewinner in international competitions in Britain\, Italy\, Russia and Germany as well as working with orchestras including the London Philharmonic and Northern Sinfonia. He has been invited to play for Prince Charles at Kensington Palace and for the 70th birthday celebrations of Rostropovitch. He has performed as soloist with the Royal Philharmonic\, Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra and Southern Pro Musica among others. He is also one of the founding members of chamber music group\, Ensemble Reza. \nHe has regularly performed in a variety of venues from smaller\, intimate venues such as the Green Note and Vortex to venues such as the Purcell Room\, Kings Place\, Royal Albert Hall\, Cadogan Hall\, Royal Festival Hall\, Barbican\, Teatro dal Verme\, and recorded for the BBC. \nA big part of Pavlos’ musical life also involves outreach and education work. He has worked for groups such as Live Music Now\, Pied Piper\, In Harmony\, Music for Life and the Trinity’s Laban’s Animate Orchestra. He gives masterclasses and workshops for the London Cello Society and has also been director for the National Chamber music cello courses of Pro Corda. \nPavlos has been performing regularly at Festival of Chichester for the last 13 years.
