SUMMARY:Event M9: Debussy\, Chopin\, Shostakovitch. Sonatas for cello and piano
DESCRIPTION:Pavlos Carvalho (cello) and Andrew Quartermain (piano) explore ground-breaking masterpieces all now admired for the elegance and romanticism of their lyrical melodies. However\, when first performed\, each was misunderstood\, often being dismissed as the writings of composers not sound of mind or body. \nPavlos Carvalho has been a prizewinner in International competitions in Britain\, Italy\, Russia and Germany as well as working with orchestras including the London Philharmonic and Northern Sinfonia. He has been invited to play for Prince Charles at Kensington Palace and for the 70th birthday celebrations of Rostropovitch. He has performed as soloist with the Royal Philharmonic\, Covent garden Chamber Orchestra and Southern Pro Musica among others. He is also one of the founding members of chamber music group\, Ensemble Reza. \nHe has regularly performed in a variety of venues from smaller\, intimate venues such as the Green Note and Vortex  to  venues such as the Purcell room\, Kings Place\, Royal Albert Hall\, Cadogan Hall\, Royal Festival Hall\, Barbican\, Teatro dal Verme\, and recorded for the BBC. \nA big part of Pavlos’ musical life also involves outreach and education work. He has worked for groups such as Live Music Now\, Pied Piper\, In Harmony\, Music for Life and the Trinity’s Laban’s Animate Orchestra. He gives masterclasses and workshops for the London cello society and has also been director for the National Chamber music cello courses of Pro Corda. \nPavlos has been performing regularly at the Chichester festival for the last 13 years. \nAndrew Quartermain is a British concert pianist and music educator. For 17 years he was CEO and Artistic Director of Pro Corda\, the National Chamber Music School. There he oversaw a huge expansion of participation\, including national schools delivery and the only UK music festival dedicated to chamber music in schools. It was also where he founded the national Create Together programme for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. This series went on to serve SEND schools throughout the country. The educational possibilities for music and autism has been a particular focus of Andrews’ career. \nAndrew also focuses on adult education and runs regular Piano Retreat Weekends for adult learners. He also founded the Piano Sanctuary company and brand. \nHe performs widely with instrumentalists from across Europe\, and has a long standing association with Ensemble Reza.

SUMMARY:Event M39: Handel's Samson
DESCRIPTION:Portsmouth Choral Union with The Consort of Twelve presents Handel’s Samson\, first performed in Covent Garden\, London in 1743. Renowned for its dramatic power\, magnificent choruses\, expressive solos and intricate orchestration. Come and enjoy this compelling oratorio. Conductor David Gostick. \nHandel composed Samson immediately after Messiah in 1741 but it was not performed until 1743 in London. It proved an instant success and has never fallen entirely out of favour since then. \nSamson is about the biblical judge Samson\, focusing on his betrayal by his Philistine lover Dalila\, who discovers his strength comes from his uncut hair and has it shorn\, leading to his capture\, blinding\, and enslavement by the Philistines.

SUMMARY:Event M42: Bach Solo Suites 1 and 5
DESCRIPTION:Pavlos Carvalho performs and shares thoughts on two of Bach’s remarkable\, experimental and adventurous suites for solo cello: the youthful purity of the 1st suite in G major Suite by Bach\, paired with his profound\, pensive and meditative 5th suite in C minor. SUMMARY:Event M45: Chichester Symphony Orchestra Summer Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a musical journey from the very tip of South America to Leipzig in Germany where Schumann’s Symphony No 1 was first performed in March 1841. We break our journey in London where Elgar’s Cello Concerto was premiered in 1919. Our soloist will be the acclaimed Aglaia Carvalho-Dubost. \nSimon Wilkins has conducted Chichester Symphony Orchestra since 2018. He is also an accomplished cellist\, music teacher and composer. He invites us to join with him on a musical journey to the very tip of South America\, and the landscapes of the Tierra del Fuego – literally\, the land of fire. For this composition\, Simon took Latin rhythms and film music as his inspiration. Originally composed some years ago\, it has now been revised and updated for 2026. \nFrom there we head to Leipzig in Germany where Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 was first performed in March 1841\, some six months after Schumann had finally managed to marry his childhood sweetheart\, Clara Wieck. It was to be a fruitful partnership\, even though Clara’s father was bitterly opposed to the marriage. This symphony by Schumann will be the major work in the second half of our concert. \nThe middle work in our concert will be a performance of the Cello Concerto by Edward Elgar. The concerto was composed in the aftermath of World War I while Elgar and his wife were staying at Brinkwells\, their country cottage in Fittleworth\, West Sussex. It is quite different in style from the earlier Violin Concerto and is much more contemplative and elegiac. The concerto was dedicated to Sir Sidney Colvin and his wife – friends of the Elgar’s (Sir Sidney was a curator at the British Museum). \nThe Cello Concerto is one of the most popular today in the international repertoire partly as a result of performances and/or recordings by Jacqueline du Pre\, Mstislav Rostropovich\, Paul Tortelier\, Julian Lloyd-Webber and Sheku Kanneh-Mason. Our own soloist is the already acclaimed Aglaia Carvalho-Dubost who is at the start of her professional career and has already performed at London’s Barbican\, the Royal Albert Hall and Wigmore Hall.

SUMMARY:Event M52: Echoes and Dreams: An Evening of Nostalgic Greek music
DESCRIPTION:Pavlos Carvalho (bouzouki)\, Sarah Carvalho-Dubost (cello) and George Tsolakis (vocals/guitar) take you on a journey through all of Greece with classic songs by Loizos\, Theodorakis\, Zabetas\, Xarhakos\, Hadjidakis and more. \nAn evening of beautiful Greek music that offers a bridge to the past\, across the seas\, and a glimpse into the future. Music from different eras of great Greek composers including Tsitsanis\, Zabetas\, Theodorakis\, Xarhakos\, Hadjidakis\, Loizos\, Kazandizis\, Andriopoulos\, as well as original compositions from members of the group. Arrangements for voice\, guitar\, cello\, bouzouki\, baglama and harmonica. Songs such as Eho ena Kafene\, Tzamaikia\, Min klais\, Paei\, paei\, Siko horepse koukli mou and many more that have resonated throughout Greek households for so many decades. \nMusicians\nGeorge Tsolakis (voice\, guitar\, baglama)\,\nSarah Carvalho-Dubost (voice\, cello\, guitar)\,\nPavlos Carvalho (voice\, bouzouki\, harmonica) \nGeorge\, Sarah and Pavlos are musicians who have been on the Greek music scene for many years. Between them they perform with different groups\, including Amalgama\, Plastikes Karekles and The Icons of Greek Music Project\, to name but a few. They have performed at venues including the Green Note\, Vortex\, Jamboree\, Royal Festival Hall\, King’s Place and Royal Albert Hall. However\, their passion is playing in the smaller\, more intimate venues where they present these songs\, closer to the audience\, in an ambience of sharing and intimate storytelling. \nEven though the classical cello is not an instrument traditionally associated with Greek music\, when its rich\, human\, sustained sound combines with the sparkle of the bouzouki and the exoticness of Greek microtonal voice\, something magical happens. Two worlds become one and a new common language emerges. After trying it once\, the results were such a beautiful revelation that continuing to explore this minimal combination of instruments with voice was too irresistible to not go further. So here we are\, with a very personal project that includes our arrangements of traditional Greek songs we love and some new compositions of ours\, inspired by the music of the past.
