Event M25 – BEYOND BACH WITH PAVLOS CARVALHO…SOLO CELLO

This exploration of the cello by Pavlos Carvalho celebrates the many different sounds of this beautiful instrument, from Bach’s orchestra and even ‘bagpipes’, the flamenco guitar of Cassado’s suite and Ligeti’s dialogue between two human voices, the most fundamental instrument of all.

From Bach to Ligeti and beyond, composers have embraced the seeming limits of this beautiful instrument, and written pieces that break through them, just casting aside.

Bach especially wrote his suites in a way that plays with the endless possibilities of the cello, taking the single instrument and writing polyphonic music, using the cello as a whole orchestra.

This programme explores and celebrates the many different sounds of the cello, from Bach’s orchestra & even ‘bagpipes’ , the flamenco guitar of Cassado’s suite for solo cello & Ligeti’s dialogue between two human voices, the most fundamental instrument of all.

Programme:
Bach: Suite no. 6 in D major
Ligeti: Dialogo
Cassado: Suite for solo cello

Tickets £12, students £5, under-12s free
