Event SW16: WRITING YOUR MEMOIR: THE POWER OF OWNING YOUR STORY WITH AUTHOR HELEN GARLICK

Have you ever thought about writing your own book? Have you made a start but aren’t sure how to move forward with it Fancy a cuppa and a piece of cake? Join author Helen Garlick to chat about getting your story written.

Author Helen Garlick specialised in talking solutions throughout her 35 year career as a lawyer and mediator. Ironically, this was not encouraged in her own family. When her brother David died in February 1981, Helen’s lawyer father Geoffrey fought to have the verdict of ‘suicide’ overturned. Then, when Helen’s mother Monica died in December 2017, Helen found her mum’s note on the back of an envelope about being ‘afflicted’ (sadly, her choice of word). Married for 59 years and a doting grandmother, nobody suspected that her enigmatic mother held a secret beyond the grave.

Helen’s talk about writing her memoir in Sussex will cover secrets, shame, sobriety, the courage to speak out, healing and ultimately joy as well as practical tips (and the benefits of having a dog as a writing companion!) Helen inspires others to speak out and write about their stories and runs coastal writing retreats in North Devon.
