Event M20: A European Odyssey

Hampshire Recorder Sinfonia’s stunning musical performances under the direction of Helen Hooker have undoubtedly reversed the public’s perception of the recorder’s extraordinary sound and capability. All seven sizes of instrument from the tiny sopranino to the growling subcontrabass will feature in this evening’s characterful musical journey across Europe.
The recorder is one of the most quietly beautiful and remarkably adaptable instruments in the world. It’s probably the most underestimated! Ultimately, whatever its size, the mystique of the instrument lies in its paradox: it is simple yet profound, ancient and yet current, delicate yet powerful. In skilled hands it becomes astonishingly expressive and can portray sorrow, joy, mischief and serenity.
